Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement
Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a private all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare, often with networks and extras. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works with Original Medicare to help pay deductibles and coinsurance, usually with broader provider access and a separate monthly premium. You typically choose one path — not both at the same time.
Side-by-side basics
Advantage: One plan card for A/B (often D). May have $0 plan premium plus Part B. Networks, prior auth, and copays are common. Annual out-of-pocket max for medical services. Extras like dental/vision may be included.
Supplement (Medigap): You keep Original Medicare. Medigap helps with gaps (deductibles/coinsurance depending on the letter plan). Usually any Medicare-accepting provider nationwide. Separate Part D for drugs. Medigap has its own premium; benefits are standardized by plan letter (G, N, etc.), while premiums vary by insurer.
Florida / Central Florida angle
Many Central Florida residents compare $0-premium Advantage plans against Medigap flexibility for travel or specialist access. County formularies and hospital systems in Kissimmee–Orlando–Brevard differ — a good fit in one ZIP may not match another. Underwriting can apply if you buy Medigap outside guaranteed-issue windows.
How to decide
Ask: Do my doctors participate in this Advantage network? How often do I travel? What are my expected prescriptions and specialist needs? What monthly premium can I budget (Part B + plan/Medigap + Part D)? Review during AEP or other valid periods. See also What is Medicare Advantage?
