Medicare Insurance in Florida — Explained
Medicare can be confusing — multiple parts, enrollment windows, and plan types. We cut through the complexity and help you find the coverage that works best for your health and budget.
Understanding the Parts of Medicare
Medicare is divided into parts that cover different types of healthcare. Understanding each part is the first step to choosing the right coverage.
Part A — Hospital Insurance
Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care. Most people don't pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.
Part B — Medical Insurance
Covers outpatient medical services: doctor visits, preventive care, outpatient procedures, lab tests, and durable medical equipment. Part B requires a monthly premium (standard is ~$174.70/month in 2024).
Part C — Medicare Advantage
A private insurance alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A & B). These plans often include dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drug coverage — sometimes at a $0 premium. Offered by approved private insurers.
Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage
Adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare (Parts A & B) or some Medicare Cost Plans. Offered through private insurers. Premiums and formularies vary by plan — we help you compare based on your specific medications.
Medicare Supplement Plans
Original Medicare doesn't cover everything. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans help cover the "gaps" — your deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance that you'd otherwise pay out of pocket.
There are standardized Medigap plan letters (Plan G, Plan N, etc.) that offer the same basic benefits regardless of which insurer you choose — the difference is in premium pricing. We compare dozens of carriers to find you the best rate.
When Can I Enroll in Medicare?
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): 7-month window around your 65th birthday
- General Enrollment Period: January 1 – March 31 each year (late enrollment)
- Special Enrollment Period: If you're still covered by employer insurance past 65
- Annual Election Period (AEP): Oct 15 – Dec 7 — change Advantage or Part D plans
- Under 65 with Disability: You may qualify for Medicare before age 65
Missing Your Enrollment Window Can Be Costly
Late enrollment in Part B and Part D can result in permanent premium penalties. Contact us early so we can help you enroll on time and avoid unnecessary costs.
