When Can I Enroll in Medicare?

You can first enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) — generally a 7-month window around the month you turn 65. After that, other windows apply: the General Enrollment Period (GEP), Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) for qualifying life events, and the Annual Election Period (AEP) each year from October 15 through December 7 for Advantage and Part D changes.

Main enrollment windows

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): Usually 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after your 65th birthday month. Best time to start Parts A and B without late penalties.
  • General Enrollment Period (GEP): January 1 – March 31 if you missed IEP and do not qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Coverage timing and possible Part B late penalties can apply.
  • Special Enrollment Period (SEP): Extra time after certain events — for example ending employer/group coverage, moving out of a plan service area, or other CMS-defined situations.
  • Annual Election Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7 every year. Switch Medicare Advantage or Part D plans, or move between Advantage and Original Medicare (with Part D as needed). Changes usually take effect January 1.
  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1 – March 31 for people already in an Advantage plan — limited switch options apply. Confirm current rules each year.

Florida / Central Florida notes

Enrollment calendars are federal, but plan menus are local. Kissimmee, Orlando, St. Cloud, and Brevard residents should review doctors and pharmacies in their ZIP before AEP. If you are still working past 65 with creditable employer coverage, ask about delaying Part B to avoid gaps and penalties — do not assume; verify with SSA and an advisor.

Action steps

Mark your IEP if you are approaching 65. If you already have Medicare, put AEP (Oct 15–Dec 7) on your calendar. Gather a doctor and medication list before comparing. Missing windows can mean waiting months or paying permanent late penalties for Part B or Part D.
