How Does Medicare Work in Florida?

Medicare in Florida works the same way as in other states: it is a federal health insurance program for people 65 and older and for some younger people with disabilities. You choose Original Medicare (Parts A and B), often plus Part D and/or a Supplement — or a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan sold by a private insurer that includes A and B (and often D).

The four parts, in plain English

Part A helps with inpatient hospital care, limited skilled nursing, hospice, and some home health. Many people do not pay a Part A premium if they (or a spouse) paid Medicare taxes long enough. Part B helps with doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment — and has a monthly premium. Part C (Medicare Advantage) is a private alternative that bundles A and B, often with drug coverage and extras. Part D covers prescription drugs through private plans.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies are separate: they help pay Original Medicare deductibles and coinsurance. You generally cannot use Medigap with a Medicare Advantage plan.

How this plays out in Florida

Federal rules set the framework, but the plans you can buy depend on your county and ZIP code. In Central Florida — Kissimmee, Orlando, St. Cloud, Osceola, Orange, and Brevard — residents typically see many Medicare Advantage and Part D options each year, plus standardized Medigap letters if they stay on Original Medicare. Networks, formularies, and extras change annually, so comparing by your doctors and medications matters more than a plan name.

What to do next

Start by confirming you have (or need) Part A and Part B, then decide whether Original Medicare plus Supplement/Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan fits your doctors, travel habits, and budget. Review enrollment windows so you avoid late penalties. Official details are always at Medicare.gov.

Common questions

The federal program rules are the same nationwide. What differs by Florida county are the private Advantage, Part D, and Medigap options offered each year.
Not necessarily. Most people need A and B. Then they choose either Advantage (often with D built in) or Original Medicare plus optional Supplement and/or Part D.
