What Is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is coverage offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans must cover at least the same hospital and medical benefits as Original Medicare (Parts A and B). Many also include prescription drugs and extras such as dental, vision, or hearing — often with network rules and different cost-sharing than Original Medicare.

How Advantage differs from Original Medicare

With Original Medicare you generally use any provider that accepts Medicare. Advantage plans often use HMO or PPO networks, may require referrals, and set copays/coinsurance by service. They usually have an annual out-of-pocket maximum for Part A/B services. You still keep Medicare, but the Advantage plan becomes how you receive most benefits.

Many Florida Advantage plans advertise $0 plan premiums in addition to the Part B premium you typically still owe. Extras and drug coverage vary widely by plan and county — always check the Evidence of Coverage, not just a summary.

Central Florida context

Osceola, Orange, and Brevard counties usually offer multiple Advantage carriers each year. Networks that work in Kissimmee may differ from Orlando or Melbourne. Snowbirds and frequent travelers should ask about out-of-area and emergency rules before enrolling.
