Does Medicare Cover Dental?

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) generally does not cover routine dental care such as cleanings, fillings, extractions, or dentures. Some Medicare Advantage plans include limited dental benefits as extras. Standalone dental insurance or discount programs are other options. Always read the plan’s dental schedule — coverage caps and networks vary.

What Original Medicare may vs. may not cover

Routine preventive and restorative dental is typically excluded. In limited situations, Medicare Part A may help with certain hospital-based dental services tied to a covered medical procedure (for example, jaw reconstruction after an injury). Those cases are narrow — do not assume a cleaning or implant is covered.

Advantage and Florida options

Many Central Florida Advantage plans advertise dental allowances or preventive dental. Benefits often include annual maximums, waiting periods, or in-network dentists only. Medigap does not typically add dental either. Compare dental alongside medical networks — a plan with a high dental allowance is not helpful if your dentist is out of network.

Action

Ask your dentist which networks they accept. If dental is a priority, filter Advantage plans by dental benefits during AEP, or explore a separate dental policy. Related reading: What is Medicare Advantage? and Advantage vs. Supplement.
